The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is located in the capital city of Hanoi, approximately 8 kilometers from the city center. Covering an area of 3.27 hectares, it is recognized as Vietnam’s finest modern museum and one of Hanoi’s renowned attractions.

The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology was first built in 1987, completed in 1995, and officially opened to the public on November 12, 1997. The museum displays a wide range of artworks and everyday objects, including traditional Vietnamese musical instruments, conical hats, and kerosene lamps, supplemented by maps, videos, and models that vividly and authentically showcase the cultural development and living customs of the Vietnamese people. Inside the museum stands an ancient stilted grass house supported by wooden pillars, elevated about 3 meters off the ground. Visitors must climb an inclined wooden ladder at the front of the house to reach the bamboo platform, then remove their shoes to enter the interior, making for a truly unique experience. The roof of this old grass house is covered with thick, dried straw, and the front and rear ridges form a 70-degree angle, giving the structure an unusually towering appearance. The interior is furnished with various household items once used by the Vietnamese people. Both the floor and inner walls of the house are covered with smooth bamboo strips, and the bamboo flooring is supported by thick wooden beams underneath. It is said that this design was created to adapt to Vietnam’s climate and showcases remarkable ingenuity.
