Kyushu's Kawachi Wisteria Garden: A 100-meter Wisteria Tunnel Where Ticket Prices Soar to ¥1,000 at Its Most Beautiful

Japan’s cherry blossom season is gradually coming to an end, but at the private garden "Kawachi Wisteria Garden" in Kitakyushu, the thousand-tatami area of wisteria is at its most stunning. The endless "sea of wisteria" has not only been hailed as a world wonder, but in recent years, the number of flower enthusiasts flocking here from around the globe has been steadily increasing.

The "Kawachi Wisteria Garden" welcomes its wisteria season every late April to early May. With 22 varieties and 100 wisteria trees supported by a 3,000-tatami flower trellis, they cascade down like waterfalls, forming a 220-meter-long tunnel interwoven with purple, white, and red hues. Walking into the tunnel, visitors are instantly captivated by the breathtaking scenery.

However, the "Kawachi Wisteria Garden" was originally just a hidden gem known to many flower lovers. The owner, fearing that too many tourists might damage the wisteria, did not promote it at all. It wasn’t until the past couple of years, when many netizens dubbed it one of the "World’s Top 10 Wonders" and "World’s Most Beautiful 10 Tree-lined Tunnels," sparking heated discussions on Twitter and Facebook, that tourist numbers began to rise year by year.

Interestingly, the "Kawachi Wisteria Garden" adjusts its admission fee between ¥300 and ¥1,000 (approximately NT$88 to NT$295), depending on the blooming conditions. When the ticket price reaches ¥1,000, it means the wisteria inside is at its most beautiful. The garden also welcomes visitors to bring their own meals and enjoy a picnic or chat under the wisteria waterfall. However, pets are not allowed, and karaoke is prohibited on the premises.

In addition, this place is actually one of the notable maple-viewing spots in the Kitakyushu area. With about 700 maple trees, the garden turns a fiery red from mid-November to mid-December. However, the maple grove is not open during the wisteria season.
