Municipal Water Puppet Theatre

The Municipal Water Puppet Theatre is located on the north shore of Hồ Hoàn Kiếm in Hanoi and is one of the most renowned water puppet theatres in Vietnam. Watching a water puppet show is one of the must-do activities when visiting Hanoi. Water puppetry originated during the Lý Dynasty (1010–1225 AD) in the Red River Delta region, which was dotted with lakes and ponds. The performances are typically based on scenes from the daily lives of Vietnamese people, especially those related to water such as fishing and transplanting rice seedlings. The stage is built over water, and the puppeteers stand in the water behind a screen to control the puppets. The shows are highly entertaining and very popular with audiences, which is why the theatre is always bustling with visitors — mostly international tourists. Water puppetry has now been inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
