Lakshmi Narayan Temple
The Lakshmi Narayan Temple is a Hindu temple situated in India's capital, New Delhi, and is one of the most renowned temples in the country. It was initially constructed in 1622 by Vir Singh Deo and underwent renovations in 1793 by Prithvi Singh. Between 1933 and 1939, the temple was entirely rebuilt with funding from the wealthy Birla family of India at the time, which is why it is also known as the Birla Temple. Its inauguration in 1939 was attended by Mahatma Gandhi himself.
The Lakshmi Narayan Temple is dedicated to the goddess of wealth and prosperity, Lakshmi, and her consort Narayana (also known as Vishnu). Lakshmi, often translated as the "Goddess of Fortune" or "Goddess of Wealth," is the Hindu deity associated with happiness and affluence in Brahmanism and Hinduism. She has many titles, one of the more common being “Shri” (श्री) or “Mahashri” (महाश्री), meaning “auspiciousness” or “prosperity.” Vishnu is one of the principal deities of Hinduism, known as part of the Hindu trinity along with Brahma (the creator) and Shiva (the destroyer). Vishnu is the preserver and protector of the universe. According to Hindu belief, Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism, is also an incarnation of Vishnu, who spread unique teachings to guide and subdue malevolent spirits such as rakshasas in order to maintain cosmic order.
