India Gate, New Delhi

Also known as the "All India War Memorial," India Gate is situated in the heart of India’s capital, New Delhi. It was built to commemorate the 90,000 British and Indian soldiers who lost their lives during World War I. As a prominent landmark in New Delhi, India, it attracts worldwide attention from travelers.

Designed by Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens, a pioneer among 20th-century British architects and one of Britain’s greatest architects, India Gate draws inspiration from the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, which is why its appearance closely resembles that of the famous French monument. Construction began in 1921, and the gate was unveiled in 1933. Standing 48.7 meters high and 21.3 meters wide, it is entirely built from red sandstone. The central arch is 42 meters tall, and the upper part bears the word "INDIA" along with the year of construction. The walls on either side of the archway are inscribed with the names of over 90,000 soldiers who died in battle, honoring their immense contribution to world peace.

At the top of India Gate is a large stone bowl with a diameter of 3.5 meters. On major holidays, the bowl is filled with oil and lit, creating a flame that rises more than a meter high and can be seen from afar.
