St. Stephen’s Church

St. Stephen’s Church is located on a bustling street in Delhi, India. It was built in 1862 by missionaries of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) and the colonial authorities. Now part of the Diocese of Delhi of the Church of North India, it is one of the most important churches in the country.

The church is a classic example of Italian Gothic Revival architecture, heavily influenced by Romanesque style. Its overall red hue gives off a sacred ambiance. The red color is said to symbolize the blood of Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr and the city's patron saint, as well as that of India’s first Christian martyr, who was killed in Delhi during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. In addition to its ornate walls and ceilings, the church features uniquely beautiful stained-glass rose windows, a Delhi specialty. The interior is lavishly decorated with rows of exquisitely carved sandstone pillars. Its arched windows allow sunlight to illuminate the interior, casting a warm glow over the wooden pews.

The church is affiliated with the renowned St. Stephen’s College and Hospital, with the college now being part of the University of Delhi.
