The Iron Pillar of Delhi

The Iron Pillar of Delhi is located in the courtyard of the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque in Delhi, India. It is one of India's most renowned ancient monuments. Due to its remarkable resistance to corrosion, the pillar has remained intact for over a thousand years, drawing attention from both archaeologists and metallurgists. It stands as a testament to the advanced iron smelting technology of ancient India.

The Iron Pillar of Delhi stands 7.2 meters above the ground, with a diameter of 1.12 meters, and extends 2 meters underground. Its total weight is estimated to be around 10 tons. Made of wrought iron with a purity of 99.72%, it was constructed using forge welding techniques. Originally, the pillar was part of a Jain temple complex, serving as one of the pillars in one of the 27 temples. Based on architectural patterns found on coins from the Gupta Dynasty, modern scholars believe it was likely built during the reign of Chandragupta II (375–415 AD). However, some sources suggest it may date back as early as 912 BC.

The surface of the Iron Pillar shows very little rust. Scientific studies have revealed that the pillar contains phosphorus, which reacts with the air to form a dense protective oxide layer, resulting in minimal corrosion. In 1934, experts from the Indian Institute of Technology conducted research on the pillar and discovered an extremely thin protective film on its exterior that prevents rusting. This film, only one-twelfth of an inch thick, is composed of iron, oxygen, and hydrogen. Additionally, regular oiling by locals and the dry local climate have contributed to its preservation.
