Lotus Temple

The Lotus Temple in New Delhi, India, took six years to complete and opened in 1986. It gets its name from its lotus-like shape. The temple is surrounded by three layers of white marble petals from the inside out, with the top constructed from prefabricated components. This half-open white lotus stands 34.27 meters high and has a base diameter of 74 meters. The entire building is meticulously designed using geometric principles, symbolizing peace and tranquility. The interior of the temple is completely hollow, creating a serene atmosphere, with only rows of benches and bright skylights available for prayer and contemplation. The base of the lotus structure features nine interconnected pools of clear water, enhancing the overall sense of purity and sanctity. A sunken large pool, set against a lake-blue backdrop, reflects the shimmering water, creating a uniquely tranquil and evocative ambiance.
