St Andrew's Cathedral

Introduction

St Andrew's Cathedral is located on Coleman Street. It was designed and built in 1862 by Colonel Ronald MacPherson to replace an earlier church that had been erected in honour of Sir Stamford Raffles. Among those involved in the construction were Indian convicts with specialized architectural skills, who extensively employed construction methods widely used by Indians during the colonial era. They mixed shell lime with egg white and sugar to form a paste, then blended it with water and softened coconut husks to create a practical type of plaster. Buildings constructed with this material became impervious once dried, while also exhibiting a smooth, glossy finish that was highly attractive. The stained glass windows above the west wing entrance and the monument on the lawn were both erected in recognition of Colonel MacPherson.
