Introduction

The Sun Yat-sen Nanyang Memorial Hall, formerly known as Wan Qing Yuan, was the former site of the Nanyang branch of the Tongmenghui (Chinese Revolutionary Alliance) and preserves many important historical materials related to Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s time in Singapore. Wan Qing Yuan was originally built by a wealthy merchant surnamed Zhang for use by the Nanyang branch of the Tongmenghui. Starting in 1905, Dr. Sun Yat-sen visited Singapore several times and used this place as the activity base for the Nanyang branch of the Tongmenghui. In March 1966, the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce renovated the long-changing-hands Wan Qing Yuan and reopened it for the public to pay tribute to the great man, Dr. Sun Yat-sen. At the front of the memorial hall stands a seated statue of Dr. Sun. The interior displays photos of Dr. Sun’s revolutionary activities. A small shop near the entrance offers brochures in Chinese and English as well as postcards commemorating Dr. Sun. Additionally, when there are many visitors, videos are shown on the second floor. Within the memorial hall, the bronze bed where Dr. Sun slept, as well as the tables and chairs he used, are displayed as they were originally arranged. The library and exhibition rooms in the hall collect and display materials and images related to Singapore's history. In the center of the garden is a fountain, behind which stands a stone pedestal holding a bronze statue of Dr. Sun. Behind the statue is a two-story, protruding-shape building where Dr. Sun once lived.  Transportation
