Introduction

In the 1970s, this street was quite famous among sailors from around the world. Just mentioning Bugis Village would immediately bring to mind the beautiful hostesses in the bars. Over a decade ago, the Singapore government declared this street an undesirable area. It was not until 1991 that Bugis Street gradually regained its former lively atmosphere of bright lights and bustling crowds, and shed its previous seedy reputation. When night falls, the approximately 100-meter stretch between Victoria Street and Beach Road becomes crowded with all kinds of stalls — over 100 in total — including food stalls, fruit shops, clothing stores, CD and tape shops, gift shops, watch shops, and more.
