The Asian Civilisations Museum opened in 1997 and is dedicated primarily to the study of cultures and civilizations across Asian countries. It is one of Singapore’s most outstanding museums and also an ideal place for some ethnic groups in Singapore to explore their ancestral roots. The museum celebrates the multiculturalism that makes up Singapore’s multi-ethnic society and also enables future generations to better appreciate the rich cultures of Asia.

The Asian Civilisations Museum houses historical materials and artifacts from China, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and West Asia. The ethnic groups from these regions form the foundation of present-day Singapore. The museum is divided into five exhibition zones: the Singapore River zone, the China zone, the Southeast Asia zone, the West Asia zone, and the South Asia zone. The Singapore River zone showcases the areas through which the Singapore River flows as well as its key commercial and financial districts. As the hub of Singapore’s commerce and social life, the river has played a significant role in the city’s development. This zone also recounts key stories and events in Singapore’s history. Upon entering the China zone, visitors are greeted by the “dragon,” a symbol of China. The zone boasts a large collection of ceramics, white porcelain, calligraphy, costumes, paintings, and Buddhist stone carvings and sculptures. The West Asia zone focuses on the religions originating from West Asia, with an emphasis on Islam due to its prominent influence on the religious formation of Singapore. The Southeast Asia zone features items dating back over 2,500 years, mainly including bronzeware and ceramics. The South Asia zone explores the diversity and richness of religious culture through religion, science, and performing arts, housing countless religious-related artworks.

At the Asian Civilisations Museum, you can not only learn about the history and culture of Singapore but also delve deeply into the civilizations of other Asian countries, whose splendid cultures are truly admirable. The museum is open from 13:00 to 19:00 on Mondays, and from 09:00 to 19:00 from Tuesdays to Sundays, with extended hours until 21:00 on Friday evenings.
