The Peranakan Museum, a sister museum to the Asian Civilisations Museum, was established in 2008 as a place to explore Peranakan culture. The museum aims to collect and showcase some of the finest Peranakan artifacts in the world, presenting the Peranakan culture in the most comprehensive way possible.

The Peranakan Museum is a three-story white building that was originally constructed in 1912 as the former Tao Nan Chinese School. Despite having only three floors, it is more than enough to vividly tell the history, culture, and life of the Peranakan people, making it Singapore’s most renowned and finest Peranakan museum. The museum has 10 permanent galleries themed around the lives of the Peranakan, displaying the unique culture of Southeast Asia. The biggest highlight is the Peranakan bridal bed, on which a Chinese woman gave birth to her 11 children. Gallery One explores the cultures of the Chinese in Singapore, Malacca, Penang, and other parts of Southeast Asia, where you can view the bridal chamber and wedding scenes prepared for Chinese weddings. Gallery Six showcases Chinese handicrafts and the education of future generations. Gallery Seven focuses on the religious beliefs and faiths of the Chinese. Gallery Eight introduces the significant contributions made by the Chinese in Singapore’s business, political, and social affairs. Gallery Nine is dedicated to Chinese cuisine, featuring some of the world’s finest porcelain used by the Baba and Nyonya in their kitchens.

The Peranakan Museum is a truly authentic museum that delves into the culture, religion, and life of the Chinese in Southeast Asian countries, offering deep insight into the history and way of life of the Peranakan in these regions. The artifacts they left behind have become invaluable treasures. The museum is open from 13:00 to 19:00 on Mondays, and from 09:00 to 19:00 from Tuesdays to Sundays.
