Fuk Tak Chi Temple

Between 1820 and 1824, a wave of immigration to Singapore emerged along China’s coastal regions, mostly consisting of Cantonese Hakka people from the coastal areas. They brought with them a rich culture and long history. To pray for safety, they built the Fuk Tak Chi Temple to seek the blessings of Da Bo Gong, also commonly known as the Earth God.

Also known as the “Overlooking the Sea Da Bo Gong Temple,” Fuk Tak Chi Temple is located on Telok Ayer Street in Singapore. Established in 1824 by Cantonese Hakka immigrants, it is one of the oldest temples in Singapore and served as the first stop for Chinese immigrants arriving in Singapore. In 1998, the temple was opened to the public as a museum, primarily showcasing the long history of Chinese immigration to Singapore, the living conditions of the people, as well as a variety of ancient artifacts. The over 200 ancient artifacts housed in the temple were donated by residents of Chinatown. The museum also displays many glass-case models of coastal houses, streets, and the daily life of people, illustrating the labor, trade, and living scenes of that time.
