Read Bridge is located in Clarke Quay and is a beam bridge that spans the Singapore River, connecting Clarke Quay on the north bank with the Swissôtel The Stamford on the south bank. It is named after a British businessman named William Henry Macleod Read, who was a permanent resident of Singapore and also a colonial government officer and social activist at the time. Nearby streets are also named after him.

Construction of Read Bridge began in 1881 and it was opened to the public in 1889. It is mainly open to pedestrians and cyclists. Initially, the bridge was also known as the “Green Bridge” because it was painted green for a period of time. When the bridge was first completed, it attracted many street vendors, coolies, and unemployed people who gathered around to listen to storytelling performances. In 2010, the globally popular Taiwanese street food arrived at Read Bridge, forming a Taiwanese food street that delighted locals and became widely loved.
