Owen Bridge

Owen Bridge is situated in Singapore’s Clarke Quay, upstream from Read Bridge, and crosses the Singapore River. It is an orange-yellow pedestrian bridge that links River Valley Road and Magazine Road. Constructed in 1886, it replaced an earlier pedestrian bridge known as ABC, and is named after George Owen, Singapore’s first governor directly appointed by the British.

Owen Bridge is a steel truss bridge, also commonly referred to as the “Toddy Bridge” because there were many small shops selling toddy (palm wine) nearby. From the bridge, you can see Singapore’s oldest Chinese temple, the Tan Si Chong Su Temple, built in 1876 and recognized as a national monument. The bridge is relatively narrow and short because the Singapore River is very narrow at this point—too narrow for navigation.
