True Light Church

True Light Church stands quietly in a bustling corner of Little India. Established in 1952 and recognized as an Anglican church in 1963, it is a serene and contemplative place of peace. As many of its early members were rickshaw pullers who lived and worked nearby, the building’s structure reflects strong Chinese influences and church culture.

The history of True Light Church dates back to 1911, when a missionary came to preach to the Chinese residents here and, with the help of a 21-year-old journalist, began holding Bible lessons in a barbershop—since then, the Christian community began to grow rapidly. The land for the church was purchased in the late 1920s, but the brutal World War II postponed the construction plans for ten years, and the church was finally completed in 1952. The newly built church offered free medical services and a kindergarten, meeting the needs of the local residents.

Today, worship services at True Light Church are conducted in English, Mandarin, Tamil, and other languages, catering to devout congregants wishing to hold services in this highly influential little church.
