Constructed in 1927, the Buddha Temple of Sakyamuni in Bodh Gaya is one of Singapore’s most outstanding and most visited Buddhist temples. It is also often referred to as the “Temple of a Thousand Lights,” famous for its 15-meter-tall seated Buddha statue, which continuously attracts worshippers and visitors alike.

Built by Thai monks, the architecture and decorations of the temple are deeply influenced by Thai style. Its exterior is distinct from that of typical Buddhist temples, adorned with beautiful patterns. Inside, the golden seated Buddha stands 15 meters tall and weighs over 300 tons, surrounded by countless candles, creating a magnificent sight. The grand and awe-inspiring statue is not only a great photo opportunity but also commands reverence and solemnity through its sheer size. At the base of the statue is a mural depicting important events in the life of the Buddha, and behind the statue is a room where you can find a reclining Buddha image.

During Vesak Day, the temple celebrates this significant festival. Devotees contribute funds to paste gold leaf onto the Buddha statue. Over time, year after year, the statue becomes covered with layers of gold leaf, giving it a resplendent golden appearance. The Buddha Temple of Sakyamuni in Bodh Gaya is open to the public from 8:00 to 16:45 and admission is free.
