Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple

Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple is located in the heart of Little India in southern Singapore. It is a popular Hindu temple among local devotees, built in 1881 by early Indian laborers who came to work in Singapore, making it one of the oldest temples in the country. The temple features the architecture style of South Indian Tamils and is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali, making it the first temple in Singapore to worship the goddess Kali.

Kali is highly revered among Hindu goddesses, and her presence provided a sense of security for early Indian immigrants in a foreign land. Legend has it that during the numerous air raids in World War II, many sought refuge in this temple, which weathered the bombings together with those fleeing for their lives. In the 1980s, the temple was enhanced with a distinctive entrance tower, eight main domed shrines, and several smaller domes, making it one of the most spectacular sights in Singapore.
