Chek Jawa is located on Pulau Ubin off Singapore’s northeastern coast. It consists of a headland and a 100-hectare wetland, making it one of Singapore’s few rocky coastal areas. With its stunning scenery and abundant flora and fauna, it has become a precious nature reserve.

The ecosystem of Chek Jawa comprises a sunny beach, a rocky shore, a seagrass lagoon, coral rubble, mangroves, and coastal forests. The rocky shore features bizarre rock formations, and during low tide, you can spot crabs, snails, and even moon snails and starfish hiding under the rocks. The seagrass lagoon is rich in seagrass beds—first-time visitors are sometimes startled by colorful anemones larger than their own faces. In recent years, sea cucumbers have been discovered in the lagoon, and lucky visitors might also see sea hares, squids, and mantis shrimp. The coral rubble area is the richest and most fragile part of Chek Jawa, hiding beautiful marine life. Giant sea stars are a favorite among visitors, while feather-duster worms, living corals, octopuses, seahorses, and nudibranchs are also commonly spotted. The mangroves are home to a variety of plants and animals, allowing close-up views of marine creatures such as crabs and mudskippers.

The charm of Chek Jawa is everywhere. A 1.1-kilometer-long boardwalk stretches along the coastline and through the mangrove area. From the 20-meter-high viewing tower, you can observe the daily lives of birds and even catch sight of rare species like the white-collared kingfisher and the yellow-vented bulbul.
