Raffles Landing Site

The Raffles Landing Site is located at North Boat Quay along the Singapore River, where a bronze statue of Sir Stamford Raffles stands. The statue was erected in honor of Sir Raffles, the founder of modern Singapore.

At the age of 38, Sir Stamford Raffles discovered Singapore. Under the influence of his free trade principles, Singapore grew rapidly to become Asia’s first free port. As the visionary founder of the Garden City, Sir Stamford Raffles was a key historical figure who made immense contributions to the establishment, development, and long-term planning of Singapore. His efforts transformed the city from a backward fishing village into a major trading port. Sir Raffles referred to Singapore as “my child,” and Singaporeans honor him as the “Founding Father of Singapore.”

The white statue was sculpted by renowned artist Thomas Woolner and is placed here because this was the spot where Sir Stamford Raffles first landed in Singapore. The dashing figure of Sir Stamford Raffles, with arms crossed and gaze fixed toward the horizon, stands heroically. For many years, he has symbolically watched over Singapore’s growth and development, witnessing the nation he helped establish flourish into prosperity.
