The Phuket Shell Museum is located on the southwest coast of Phuket Island. Opened in 1997, it was established by Somchai Patamakanthin and his brother, who spent over 40 years building this museum. The museum is renowned for its unique and high-value shells, and is highly popular and beloved among shell enthusiasts.

The Phuket Shell Museum houses a collection of over 2,000 types of shells, making it one of Thailand’s most valuable museums and also one of the world’s largest private shell museums. It collects and displays some of the world’s most precious shells. The museum features numerous rare shells and fossils from around the globe, including particularly captivating South Sea pearls sourced from the Andaman Sea. Beyond the astonishing variety and scale of the shell collection, the neat arrangement of these beautiful marine shells is truly breathtaking. The museum showcases the world’s largest and rarest golden pearl, large pieces of water-formed rock containing shell fossils, fossils of some of the earliest life forms on Earth, and a 250-kilogram shell with fossils dating back 380 million years, which is truly awe-inspiring.

On the ground floor of the Phuket Shell Museum, there is also a gift shop specializing in shell-themed souvenirs, selling items such as shells, shell ornaments, shell jewelry, shell keychains, and more—items that are hard to resist.
