Jeongdongjin got its name because it was a dock by the seaside directly east of Hanyang’s Heunginjimun Gate during the Joseon Dynasty. With 310 households and a population of 1,021, the village has neither teahouses nor inns—it is a small fishing community.

Jeongdongjin Station is the world’s closest train station to the sea, a fact that earned it a spot in the Guinness World Records. The first things you see upon getting off here are the sea and a uniquely twisted pine tree.

On the nearby hill lies Jeongdongjin Marine Park, along with the Jeongdongjin Beach—boasting a sandy shore about 1 kilometer long—and the Jeongdongjin Station, coastal road, and East Sea, all making for picturesque scenery. From across the station, head right, and after spotting a sign, enter the alleyway to find the trailhead leading up to Goseongsan Mountain.

Wooden steps take you to the summit. From the top, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Jeongdongjin Station, the village, and the endless expanse of blue-green sea. The area also features an outdoor sculpture park, walking trails, and an observation deck—not only great for sightseeing but also offering opportunities to enjoy tea at the Train Bar and Sailboat Bar. Jeongdongjin is also known for its close-up sunrise views, but it remains especially popular with couples.
