Jeju Haenyeo Museum

Haenyeo refers to women who dive into the sea without the aid of breathing equipment to catch seafood such as abalone, shellfish, and seaweed. Their only equipment consists of waterproof goggles, a buoyant round ball, and a net bag for collecting their catch. It is said that apart from Jeju, women engaged in this unique fishing practice can also be found in places like Japan and Russia. To pass on the haenyeo culture, the Haenyeo Museum was established within the Jeju Haenyeo Anti-Japanese Movement Memorial Park. The first floor, “Haenyeo Life,” recreates the houses where haenyeo once lived and displays the food they ate and the tools they used. The second floor, “Haenyeo Work,” mainly exhibits the tools and clothing haenyeo used while diving. This exhibition hall also provides a systematic introduction to the achievements of haenyeo during the anti-Japanese movement. The third floor of the museum is a lounge with an observation deck offering scenic ocean views. Descending from the observation deck to the second floor, then taking the left staircase down to the first floor, you will find the third exhibition hall, “The Sea.” Additionally, there are scattered sculptures on the grassy area outside the museum building. The Jeju Haenyeo Anti-Japanese Movement Monument is also erected here. A souvenir shop is located on the first floor of the museum.

Transportation: Take bus No. 100 or 200 from Jeju Airport to Jeju Suburban Bus Terminal → Transfer to a bus heading toward Sehwa or Seongsan, and get off at the Jeju Haenyeo Anti-Japanese Movement Memorial Tower in Jido-ri, Jusang-ri, Gujwa-eup. (Approximately 60 minutes)
