Seongeup Folk Village is located at the foot of Hallasan Mountain on Jeju Island, and is a small village that preserves much of Korea’s traditional culture, especially the unique heritage of Jeju. Cultural heritage is the most distinctive feature of Seongeup Folk Village. Passed down through generations, it clearly reflects the original appearance and lifestyle of ancient villages to modern visitors.

Stepping into the folk village, the hustle and bustle of the metropolis contrasts sharply with the simple serenity found here. The villagers’ houses, Confucian shrines, ancient schools, historic administrative offices, winding and straight alleys designed to block the wind, stone statues, millstones pulled by horses or oxen, fortress ruins, stone relics, black volcanic rock walls, and more make you feel as though you’ve traveled back to ancient times. In the center of the village, there are several zelkova and nettle trees said to be hundreds of years old—ancient and weathered, they preserve clear traces of bygone eras. Moreover, the folk village also boasts many intangible cultural assets, such as folk performances, local specialty foods, traditional handicrafts, and the local dialect, all of which are major draws for visitors. Additionally, the black pigs of Seongeup Folk Village are another standout feature, said to be especially nutritious.
