Jeju Stone Culture Park

Jeju Stone Culture Park is located on Namjo Road, Chodang-ri, Jeju City, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, South Korea. It is a comprehensive museum and ecologically designed park. The overall construction of the park will continue until 2020, while the first phase—including the Jeju Stone Museum, Jeju Stone Culture Exhibition Hall, and traditional Jeju thatched houses—after seven years of construction, has been completed and officially opened to the public on June 3, 2006.

Spanning a vast area, Jeju Stone Culture Park is not only a natural heritage rich in Jeju’s unique character but also a place where visitors can experience the island’s full cultural essence. After walking along a long stone wall path, the park entrance comes into view. Upon entering, visitors will encounter numerous statues of Seonhwa and her son. Passing around massive rocks and continuing along a path through the pine forest, you’ll find signs for the traditional Jeju thatched-roof houses and the museum. Interestingly, the museum is not built above ground but underground, ensuring no disruption to the surrounding natural environment. The outdoor exhibition area features 48 Dol Hareubangs (stone grandfather statues), evil-warding anti-evil towers, Jeju’s symbolic Dindol stones (standing pillars representing a home with no door due to the absence of theft), and children’s stones (placed at gravesides to accompany the deceased, reflecting the Jeju people’s belief in the afterlife). These diverse stones reflect both Jeju’s history and traditional beauty.
