Jeju Magistrate’s Office

The Jeju Magistrate’s Office is situated in Samdo 2-dong, Jeju City, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, South Korea. It functioned as the island’s political and administrative hub during the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910) and has been designated as Historic Site No. 380. Alongside other historic buildings including the Guandeongjeong Pavilion (listed as National Treasure No. 322), it is preserved as a significant cultural monument and stands as one of Jeju’s most prominent historical sites.

Originally built but later destroyed by fire in 1434, the Jeju Magistrate’s Office was subsequently rebuilt. However, during the Japanese colonial period (August 1910 – August 15, 1945), it suffered severe damage, leaving all structures except the Guandeongjeong almost unrecognizable. From 1991 to 1998, through four phases of excavation and restoration, the foundation and basic structure of the original site were confirmed based on relics and documents. After extensive research and consultation, the office was finally restored and completed in December 2002. Today, the Jeju Magistrate’s Office welcomes both domestic and international visitors in its renewed form, telling the story of its long and complex history.
