Dragon Head Rock

Dragon Head Rock is located in Yongdam-dong, Jeju City, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, South Korea. It is a rock formed when lava erupted 2 million years ago and subsequently cooled. The rock stands 10 meters tall and stretches 30 meters long. It resembles the head of a dragon that was about to soar into the sky from its underwater dragon palace but suddenly turned into stone, hence the name Dragon Head Rock.

There is a legend about Dragon Head Rock, which tells the story of a dragon that longed to ascend to the heavens. But just as it emerged from its dragon palace and leaped out of the sea, it was struck by lightning and turned into a rock, forever guarding the waters. About 200 meters east of Dragon Head Rock lies a place called Dragon Pool, said to be where the dragon once played, hence its name. The pool water is crystal clear, allowing visitors to see various colorful goldfish swimming within. Near Dragon Head Rock, not only can visitors observe the famous haenyeo (female divers) of Jeju Island working underwater, but a short 10-minute walk along the coastline leads to a small café village. What was once just a quiet spot with one or two sashimi restaurants a few years ago has now transformed into a bustling area filled with numerous cafés, congee shops, and restaurants thanks to the growth of tourism.
