Taga Taisha Shrine

Taga Taisha Shrine is located in Taga Town, Inukami District, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Established before the Age of the Gods, it is one of the oldest shrines in Japan. The shrine enshrines Izanagi-no-Mikoto and Izanami-no-Mikoto, the parents of Amaterasu Omikami worshipped at Ise Grand Shrine. Revered as deities for longevity, love, and wealth, the shrine is deeply respected by many. Locals refer to it as “Taga Daimyojin,” and its annual festival is held on April 22.

With a long history, Taga Taisha Shrine is even mentioned in Japan’s oldest historical text, the Kojiki. The shrine’s Oku-in Teien Garden is designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty by the Japanese government. In spring and summer, the ancient trees on the shrine grounds are lush and green, while a variety of flowers bloom quietly, complementing the classic historical architecture and creating an atmosphere of serene elegance. The shrine still houses a longevity stone, said to bless people with a long life. There is also a stall selling Mitoka spoons—each priced at 300 yen—which are believed to promote health and longevity, attracting many visitors to purchase them.
