【FeverTravel】New Discovery in Shiga, Japan: The Irresistible Turf Dessert House!

Japanarchitecture has always been quirky and fascinating. This time, Fever Travel is introducingJapanarchitectural maverick Terunobu Fujimori’s creation, La Collina. La Collina is Italian for “little hill,” and this work by Terunobu Fujimori is located inJapanŌmi-Hachiman, Shiga Prefecture, hence also known as “La Collina Ōmi-Hachiman.”

“La Collina Ōmi-Hachiman” is aJapanflagship store of the Japanese dessert brand TANEYA, primarily selling wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) and Western-style desserts. The second floor houses a restaurant, with its signature offering being a Baumkuchen, freshly baked on-site by skilled pastry chefs every day. More importantly, guests can lounge lazily on the grass at “La Collina Ōmi-Hachiman,” savoring delicious desserts while admiring its exquisite architecture — truly a dream come true!

Terunobu Fujimori, a renowned modern architectural historian, is also widely celebrated. He gained fame for designing the Museum of the Sakamoto Family, and his works are characterized by natural elements and playful designs. In addition to the museum and La Collina, he also designed the Senbonchatei and Bokkantei tea houses in Taipei’s Huashan 1914 Creative Park.

For this “La Collina Ōmi-Hachiman” project, Terunobu Fujimori designed a vast turf roof that harmonizes with the surrounding mountain scenery, highlighting the site’s beautiful setting nestled between Lake Biwa, Lake Nishi, and Mount Hachiman. It's an intriguing piece of architecture that encourages visitors to learn about coexistence with nature.
