When traveling in Shiga Prefecture, one can hardly miss Lake Biwa, the second largest lake in Japan. In Makino Town, northwest of the lake, there lies a nationally famous Metasequoia Avenue. It’s said that anyone driving by here will want to stop, stroll along the tree-lined path, and take photos.

This Metasequoia Avenue is located in Makino Town, Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture, stretching from north to south from the Takashima City Agricultural Park. Along this approximately 2.4-kilometer-long avenue, 500 conical-shaped metasequoia trees grow, some reaching up to 115 meters in height. Most uniquely, the scenery changes with the seasons: fresh greenery in spring, red foliage in autumn, bare trees in early winter, and snow-covered branches in winter—earning its well-deserved spot among the “New Japan 100 Scenic Tree-Lined Streets.”

Many local road-trippers and motorcycle enthusiasts particularly love to walk and take photos on the Metasequoia Avenue, as visitors can briefly park their vehicles on the side of the road when it’s quiet, snapping pictures with their beloved bikes or cars set against the beautiful backdrop.
