Hiyoshi Taisha

Hiyoshi Taisha is a Shinto shrine located in Ōtsu, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. It is the head shrine of approximately 2,000 Hiyoshi, Hie, and Sannō shrines across the country, hence it is also known as the Sannō Head Shrine, Hiyoshi Taisha. The earliest reference to this shrine can be found in Japan’s 8th-century historical text, the Kojiki, attesting to its long history. In 1571, the shrine buildings were destroyed by fire during warfare, and the current structures were rebuilt in the late 16th century.

The Sannō Head Shrine, Hiyoshi Taisha, spans a total area of 430,000 square meters. The grounds are divided into two main sections: the East Main Shrine and the West Main Shrine. Both of their main halls have been designated as National Treasures of Japan. Other historic structures such as worship halls, gate towers, and torii gates are also important cultural properties. The shrine is richly planted with a variety of flowers and trees. In spring, cherry blossoms including Somei Yoshino and weeping cherry varieties bloom in vivid colors, making it a renowned cherry blossom viewing spot. In autumn, fiery red leaves color the landscape, and when cool autumn winds blow, the falling leaves create a fairy-tale-like scene that attracts many visitors to take photos.
