Onjoji Temple

Also known as Miidera, Onjoji Temple is a Buddhist temple located in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. It serves as the head temple of the Tendai Jimon sect and is situated at Mount Nagara. Legend has it that the temple was founded in 686 by Prince Otomo Yota and is a historic site enshrining the Maitreya Buddha as its principal image.

Since its construction, Onjoji Temple has endured numerous battles, being burned down several times before being rebuilt each time and ultimately preserved to this day. The temple’s Golden Hall has been designated as a Japanese National Treasure, while its temple bell, main gate, bell tower, three-story pagoda, and Shaka Hall have all been recognized as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. In addition to these ancient structures, the temple also features an old well called Gachi, which is said to have been used to bathe Emperor Tenchi, Emperor Tenmu, and Empress Jito when they were born—thus earning it the name “Imperial Well.”

Onjoji Temple is one of Otsu City’s most renowned religious and cultural tourist attractions. The “Miidera Evening Bell” within the temple grounds is officially recognized as one of the “Eight Views of Omi.” Moreover, the temple grounds are home to around 1,000 cherry blossom trees, including Somei Yoshino and wild cherry varieties. In spring, the area transforms into a stunning sea of blossoms.
