Shingu City

Shingu City is located at the eastern end of Wakayama Prefecture and the eastern part of the Kumano region, serving as the administrative, economic, and cultural center of the Kumano area. Legend has it that deities reside in the mountains of Kumano, attracting pilgrims from afar since ancient times. Moreover, the city is one of the areas richest in relics and legends related to Xu Fu.

The natural scenery of Shingu City is boundless—magical boulders, colossal strange rocks, and the beautiful valleys lined with towering cliffs are sure to take your breath away. Blessed with exceptional natural conditions, the city exudes an even stronger sense of mystery. Among its most iconic features is the “Floating Island Forest,” an incredible woodland where the entire island appears to float atop a swamp, giving a sensation of swaying as you walk. The legends and relics of Xu Fu are also quite famous, mainly including Xu Fu’s Tomb and Xu Fu’s Monument, with local commemorative events dedicated to Xu Fu continuing to this day. Legend says Xu Fu was ordered by Emperor Qin Shi Huang to seek the elixir of immortality. After traveling far and wide, he arrived in Shingu, discovered the medicinal tree, and eventually settled there permanently, sharing various technologies with the locals. Xu Fu Park stands as a splendid legacy of this ancient legend. The park displays relevant materials and sells distinctive health-promoting products such as tea and liquor. Visitors can also dress up in cheongsams for commemorative photos.
