Wakayama Themed Train +1 Again！Ride the Red "Plum Star Train" to Visit Stationmaster Tama

Japan's "Wakayama Electric Railway" is known for its cat stationmaster and charming themed trains, making it a must-visit spot for Taiwanese tourists in Wakayama. Now, a brand-new themed train has been added—the "Plum Star Train" (うめ星電車), designed by Japanese train design master Eiji Mitooka. Starting today, it joins the other themed trains, taking passengers to Kishi Station to meet the cat stationmaster.

Yoshiki Yoshiki, Director of Wakayama Electric Railway Co., Ltd., stated that after the launch of the sleeper train Seven Stars in Kyushu, also designed by Eiji Mitooka, they invited him to create a new themed train for Wakayama Electric Railway. Since Wakayama Prefecture’s representative specialty is the Nanko plum, which was even designated as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System in 2015, they decided to use the plum as the theme when discussing the new train with Mitooka, aiming to introduce Wakayama’s specialties to overseas visitors through this themed train.

The Plum Star Train consists of two carriages, with a bright red exterior. Stepping inside the train, a faint scent of wood fills the air. Light-colored wooden elements are blended with vibrant colors to create comfortable seats on both sides of the carriage. From the ceiling, curtains, seat cushions to the wallpaper, the train is filled with plum blossom motifs.

The carriage also includes a baby seating area, as well as displays of Wakayama’s representative specialties and merchandise related to the second-generation cat stationmaster Tama, all available for purchase. However, passengers should note that trains on the Kishigawa Line operate on a random schedule with no fixed times, but screens at the stations show which themed train will run for each departure.
