Wakayama City

Wakayama City is located at the mouth of the Kii River in Japan’s Kansai region and serves as the prefectural capital, economic hub, and cultural center of Wakayama Prefecture. Historically, the city flourished as a castle town of the “Kishu Domain with 555,000 koku,” one of the Tokugawa Gosanke, and still retains a rich historical atmosphere.

Blessed with verdant natural environments and a warm climate brought by the Kuroshio Current, Wakayama City features abundant natural landscapes and historic sites, making it a great destination for exploring Wakayama Prefecture. Historic landmarks in the city include Wakayama Castle, Kokushoin, Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Kishu Toshogu Shrine, Awashima Shrine, Furukawa Bridge, and Kannondo Observatory. Among them, Wakayama Castle, along with Matsuyama Castle and Himeji Castle, is known as one of Japan’s three premier connected-style flatland mountain castles. Inside its keep, there is an exhibition room displaying historical weapons and armor such as onigawara roof tiles and suits of armor. There is also an observation deck offering panoramic views of the city. Kiyomizu-dera Temple is a popular spot to view early-blooming cherry blossoms, attracting many worshippers and visitors during the spring flowering season. Tomogashima Island, a southern paradise situated in the Kitan Strait, is scattered with fort-era artillery battery ruins and features hiking trails that loop around these historical sites. It’s especially ideal for families to play on the rocky shores or go camping in the summer.

In the western part of Wakayama City lies the “Wakayama European Marine Park,” designed with a Mediterranean port city theme. In addition to recreational facilities such as water slides, the park also includes restaurants and other amenities, drawing large crowds of visitors daily.
