Both plum blossoms and cherry blossoms belong to the Prunus genus of the Rosaceae family. These flowers are deeply intertwined with Japanese life and play a significant role in the country’s landscaping. Viewing cherry and plum blossoms in spring is among Japan’s most vibrant seasonal events. In Japan, Gunma Prefecture ranks second in plum tree production nationwide, trailing only Wakayama Prefecture, and is the top producer in eastern Japan. The Akiwa Plum Blossom Grove is one of the largest such groves.

The Akiwa Plum Blossom Grove refers to a vast area of plum trees located along the upper reaches of the Akiwa River, stretching through the hilly terrain of Annaka City. Covering a total area of 500,000 square meters, it boasts over 35,000 plum trees. In February and March, before the leaves have fully emerged, the trees burst into bloom with a few five-petal flowers. The blossoms are mostly white, though some are red or light pink. As far as the eye can see, boundless stretches of white and pink flowers bloom vibrantly, filling the air with their fragrance. At the edge of this floral sea, the outlines of Mount Myōgi and Mount Asama emerge faintly, creating an otherworldly and breathtaking scene reminiscent of a paradise on earth. During the blooming season, a series of lively events take place in the grove, including the Akiwa Plum Blossom Festival, the Akiwa Plum Grove Festival, and plum blossom photography competitions. These attract not only plum blossom enthusiasts from across Japan but also international visitors, all immersed in the ocean of plum blossoms, reluctant to leave.
