1. World Heritage Site: Tomioka Silk Mill
In June 2014, the “Tomioka Silk Mill and Related Industrial Heritage” was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, further highlighting the historical and cultural significance of the Tomioka Silk Mill. The mill buildings and related machinery, which have been in operation since 1872, have been preserved intact, bearing witness to the introduction of silk-reeling technology from France during the Meiji period. It also stands as a valuable testament to Japan’s learning from the West and the cultural exchange between Japan and France at the time.

The silk mill operated for 115 years before ceasing production in 1987. With strong support from both the government and private sectors, it has been well preserved. Some other buildings are currently under restoration, and many visitors continue to come and explore. There is also a rich selection of souvenirs and gifts related to the Tomioka Silk Mill available for purchase.

2. Yumoto Onsen
Yumoto Onsen is a renowned hot spring resort in Japan. Along the clear Yumoto River, there are many high-quality and historic hot spring ryokans. Yamanouchikan, located in Nakanojo Town, offers traditional Japanese-style suites, and thanks to its proximity to the valley, also features semi-open-air bathing areas. Guests can also enjoy delicious hot spring kaiseki and multi-course meals, as well as sample the local specialty, Jōshū beef, adding a touch of luxury to the hot spring experience. Established in 1673, Yamanouchikan is a ryokan with a long history and a serene, rustic charm. Enjoying the scenery of Yumoto Onsen in such a setting is a true highlight of any trip. The owner, Mrs. Tamura, is also a local celebrity in Yumoto Onsen—kind and approachable, she also gives captivating storytelling performances at night, which are definitely not to be missed.
