Ushiku Daibutsu

The official name of Ushiku Daibutsu is Ushiku Amida Daibutsu, a large Buddhist statue located in Ushiku City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Completed in 1989 and owned by Nishi Honganji (the Western Hongan Temple), the statue stands 120 meters tall from head to toe and weighs 4,000 tons. It is the tallest building in Ibaraki Prefecture and the second tallest Buddhist statue in the world.

Ushiku Daibutsu is the world’s largest standing Buddha statue and is recognized by the Guinness World Records as a bronze Daibutsu. The majestic figure stands serenely atop blooming lotus petals and can be seen from afar. The interior of the statue is divided into five levels from bottom to top: the World of Light, the World of Gratitude, the Lotus Treasury World, and the Vulture Peak Hall (4.5th level). Each level is uniquely decorated and houses corresponding treasures. Visitors can climb stairs from the first level or take an elevator up to the Daibutsu's chest at 85 meters above ground for a tour.

In addition to the treasures within, the surrounding scenery is also stunning, and various events are frequently held here. A vast flower garden at the foot of the statue is planted with many blossoms, which bloom in different seasons throughout the year, adding even more beauty to the entire site.
