Nunobiki Waterfall

Nunobiki Waterfall is located upstream of the Taki River, a tributary of the Kuji River in Daigo Town, Ibaraki Prefecture, in Japan's Kanto region. It stands 120 meters high and 73 meters wide, and is ranked among Japan’s three most famous waterfalls, alongside Kegon Waterfall in Tochigi Prefecture and Nachi Waterfall in Wakayama Prefecture.

The waterfall is divided into four powerful cascading tiers that flow as one down a large rock face, creating a spectacular and majestic sight. It once ranked first in a popular vote for Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls. In summer, beautiful rainbows form from the mist of the falling water; in autumn, the area around the waterfall is ablaze with colorful foliage; and in winter, the cascade freezes into sparkling crystals. Nunobiki Waterfall takes on different hues and showcases varied scenery throughout the seasons. It’s no wonder that the ancient monk Saigyo once remarked, “One must visit this waterfall in every season to truly appreciate its beauty.”

Nunobiki Waterfall is designated as a scenic spot by Ibaraki Prefecture, and there is also a nearby hot spring, Nunobiki Onsen, which is highly popular among visitors for its unique therapeutic benefits.
