Mount Tsukuba

Mount Tsukuba is a peak located at the northern end of Tsukuba City in the southern part of Japan’s Kanto region, with an elevation of 877 meters. It consists of Mount Nantai (871 meters) to the west and Mount Nyotai (877 meters) to the east. With its graceful form, it is often compared to Mount Fuji, leading to the age-old saying “Fuji in the west, Tsukuba in the east.”

Mount Tsukuba is one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains and has a long history as a center of mountain worship. The main shrines of Tsukuba Shrine are located atop both Mount Nantai and Mount Nyotai. Near the mountainsides are mountain gates and worship halls that remain active year-round. The mountain is also known for its scenic beauty — one of the oldest collections of Japanese poetry, The Manyoshu, contains verses praising its magnificence. The city-operated plum grove near the mountainside features around 3,000 plum trees of approximately 30 varieties. From mid-February to mid-March each year, the massive rocks emerging from the earth and the blooming plum blossoms create a uniquely beautiful landscape that captivates visitors from all over the world.

The summit of Mount Tsukuba offers spectacular views; on clear days, you can see distant Mount Fuji and the skyscrapers of Tokyo. In addition, using the cable car and ropeway, visitors can easily enjoy a day trip hiking experience.
