Tsukuba City is a city located 50 kilometers northeast of central Tokyo in Ibaraki Prefecture. It is a new town built in the 1960s and is well known as Tsukuba Science City. Home to the University of Tsukuba and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, it is hailed as "Japan's Silicon Valley."

Tsukuba is a city with vast green areas and beautiful natural surroundings. After decades of development, it has evolved into a metropolitan area with an international flair. As Japan's Silicon Valley, the city hosts numerous research institutions, including the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization, the National Institute of Health Sciences, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, the National Institute for Environmental Studies, the RIKEN research institute, and the Tsukuba Botanical Garden. The most famous tourist destination in the city is Mount Tsukuba, which stands at 877 meters above sea level and consists of Mount Nantai (871 meters) on the west and Mount Nyotai (877 meters) on the east. With its graceful appearance, it is often compared to Mount Fuji, leading to the age-old saying “Fuji in the west, Tsukuba in the east.”
