Sendai City Museum is the main museum in Sendai City, the capital of Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. It first opened in 1961 and was rebuilt on the same site in 1986, with the new building covering a floor area of up to 18,000 square meters. The museum houses a large collection of materials related to the history of Sendai and holds important historical significance for researching the city’s past culture and lifestyle. The surrounding area of the museum is picturesque and lush, exuding a strong cultural atmosphere.

Sendai City Museum is primarily dedicated to preserving, exhibiting, and researching materials related to the history of Sendai and collections donated by the Date Family. The Date clan was a prominent samurai family descended from the Northern House of the Fujiwara clan. From the Kamakura period through the Edo period, they were powerful daimyō in the Tohoku region and remain well-known in the area to this day. The museum preserves approximately 80,000 precious items, among which documents from the Keichō era (a Japanese era name) related to the mission sent to Europe are considered especially valuable and have been designated as National Treasures of Japan. In addition to regular exhibitions, the museum occasionally displays armor used by Date Masamune, as well as the clothing and accessories he wore during his visit to Rome — all extremely rare and valuable artifacts.
