Among Japan’s domestic New Year celebrations, besides visiting shrines to pray for peace, there are also numerous festivals and grand events to enjoy. One of Sendai’s nationally renowned New Year events, the “Sendai Hatsu-uri,” is hugely popular for selling limited-edition lucky bags or boxes every January 2nd, giving people a chance to test their luck for the new year and drawing huge crowds to the shopping streets.

The “Sendai New Year Hatsu-uri,” which begins on January 2nd right after the New Year, is a commercial tradition that dates back to the time before Date Masamune. During this period each year, Sendai’s major department stores and shopping street shops pack several featured items into lucky bags or boxes and sell them at super-discounted prices. Many popular shops see customers lining up from the night before, and the items often sell out within just a few hours the next day.

This traditional event, with over 300 years of history, draws visitors from other prefectures each year eager to snap up these great-value lucky bags. No matter what’s inside, the bags are sure to bring good luck for the coming year.
