Yamato-Koriyama Goldfish Information Center

The origin of goldfish farming in Yamato-Koriyama, Nara Prefecture, is said to date back to the year Hōei 9 (1724), when Yanagisawa Kori, a feudal lord, relocated from Kai Province (present-day Yamanashi Prefecture) to Yamato-Koriyama. After the Meiji Restoration, former samurai and farmers who had lost their stipends actively engaged in goldfish breeding, which gradually developed into an industry. In addition, the region where Yamato-Koriyama is located has many high-quality agricultural ponds, which also nurture plankton that can serve as feed for fish fry—providing ideal natural conditions for the development of the goldfish farming industry. Today, Yamato-Koriyama produces 40% of Japan’s total goldfish output, meeting domestic demand as well as exporting to Europe, the Americas, and Southeast Asian countries. The goldfish-related industry continues to grow, and the Yamato-Koriyama Goldfish Information Center is one of its most representative facilities.

Located in Shinkimachi, Yamato-Koriyama, the Yamato-Koriyama Goldfish Information Center is a museum that offers a comprehensive look at the history of the city’s goldfish farming industry and related information. The center preserves a large collection of materials on goldfish breeding methods, history, conditions, and varieties. It also displays numerous purebred goldfish, premium goldfish, and rare endangered species, all freely swimming in tanks in a dazzling array of colors.
