Shigisan Chōgosonshi-ji Temple
Shigisan Chōgosonshi-ji Temple is located on the mountainside of Mount Shigi in Higashigura, Ikoma District, Nara Prefecture, Japan. It is the head temple of Bishamonten, the deity of warriors. Legend has it that when Emperor Daigo fell ill, he ordered the monk Renge to pray to Bishamonten at the temple for the emperor’s recovery. The deity responded miraculously, and the emperor regained his health. As a result, the temple was designated as a sacred site for praying for the stability of the imperial court, peace across the nation, and the prosperity of descendants, and was bestowed with the name “Chōgosonshi-ji,” meaning “Temple for Protecting the Emperor and Ensuring the Longevity of Descendants.”
The Bishamonten enshrined at Shigisan Chōgosonshi-ji Temple is depicted wearing armor and a helmet, with a posture that seems capable of driving away all evil in the world. Though somewhat fearsome in appearance, the deity intends to convey the message that one must possess a strong and courageous heart—no matter what difficulties arise, perseverance will lead to the fulfillment of all goals. In his right hand, the deity firmly grasps a nyoi scepter, symbolizing the granting of wealth and prosperity to those with earnest desires; in his left hand, he holds a reliquary stupa, representing the bestowment of blessings and the fulfillment of wishes. As Bishamonten is revered as the deity most capable of helping people achieve business success, wealth, good fortune, and the realization of dreams, Chōgosonshi-ji Temple sees many worshippers visiting daily to offer prayers.
