Hannyabaru Plum Grove

Hannyabaru Plum Grove is located on the Kitazugi Hills in Nishiyoshino Town, Gojō City, Nara Prefecture. With twenty thousand plum trees growing from the foothills to the mountainside, it is one of Japan’s most famous plum blossom viewing spots. Poems about these plum trees have been composed since the 14th century. The grove was initially planted for the cultivation and harvest of plums, and it didn’t reach its current scale until the 19th century.

Every year from February to March, when the plum trees are in bloom, the entire Kitazugi Hills transforms into a sea of blossoms in red, white, and pink—some buds tightly closed, others brilliantly open. A large number of visitors flock here from all over the country, creating a lively atmosphere, while the faint floral fragrance carries the message of spring to those who come to admire the blossoms. Near the entrance of the plum grove lies the ruins of Hannyabaru Imperial Palace, believed to have been originally built in the early Muromachi period. It still retains thatched-roof architectural styles and a kōmon gate structure, and has been designated as an important cultural property. Together with the plum grove, it forms a harmonious blend of culture and nature.
