Attraction Introduction

The Great Buddha Hall is the main hall of Tōdai-ji, also known as the Golden Hall. Constructed in 1709, it is 57 meters wide and 50 meters deep, exuding grandeur and an antique aura. Though only two-thirds the size of the original, it remains the world’s largest wooden ancient structure.

Upon entering the Great Buddha Hall, you’ll see the 16-meter-tall bronze statue of Vairocana Buddha. The color of the Buddha’s head slightly differs from the body because the head has been stolen and recovered several times over the years. Additionally, the hall enshrines other deities such as Kokūzō Bosatsu and Cintamanicakra Avalokiteśvara. Notably, there is a hole at the base of one of the wooden pillars around the statue, known as the “Buddha’s Nose.” Legend says that if you can squeeze through it, you will be granted peace for life.
