Hatsukaichi

Hatsukaichi City is located in the western part of Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, and serves as a major timber port in western Japan. Its name originates from the fact that the current city center area hosted a regular market on the 20th of every month during the Kamakura period. Miyajima, home to Itsukushima Shrine—one of Japan’s Three Views and a UNESCO World Heritage Site—is situated within the city.

Hatsukaichi City offers a wealth of tourist attractions, including the ruins of Sakurao Castle, Dōun Temple, Iwakura Onsen, Kosegawa Onsen, Japan’s Three Views “Itsukushima of Aki” (Miyajima), Itsukushima Shrine, Miyajima Aquarium, and Daishōin. Miyajima is one of Japan’s Three Views and is renowned as a sacred island famous for its shrine built over the sea and its iconic large torii gate. The island welcomes around three million visitors annually and is considered the abode of a goddess. It is also home to many wild deer and monkeys, and at low tide, visitors can spot numerous hermit crabs on the sandy beaches. Itsukushima Shrine was established around the year 593 and boasts a history of approximately 1,400 years. It is the head shrine of about 500 other Itsukushima Shrines across Japan, with most of its architectural structures designated as National Treasures by the Japanese government. The shrine also houses many nationally important cultural properties and has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
