Hiroshima creates a "cat street view map" – let feline guides take you on a culinary and fun adventure

Japan has no shortage of cat-themed tourist spots, and to boost tourism, Hiroshima has created what it claims to be the world’s first "Cat Street View Map," featuring a popular local cat as a guide who shows visitors around Onomichi City, famous for its Cat Street.

Onomichi City, the largest city in eastern Hiroshima Prefecture, not only boasts a pilgrimage route connecting around 20 temples but also the "Cat’s Pathway," where many cats can be spotted and which is a must-visit spot for cat lovers.

The Hiroshima Prefectural Government launched the "Cat Street View Map" as a marketing tool for Onomichi, enlisting Lala, a popular cat from a local beauty salon, as the guide. Lala was also given the title of "Section Chief of Hiroshima Prefecture Backstreet Tourism" and introduces the hidden charms of Onomichi’s streets and alleys through her perspective.

The "Cat Street View Map" is divided into four areas: the shopping district, Cat’s Pathway, Kubo, and Otesuji Tenmangu Shrine, with more areas to be added in the future. The map also includes icons for cat faces, videos, and shops. By clicking on these icons, users can learn about the background of each cat, watch videos, and discover the history and features of local stores.

Officials from Hiroshima Prefecture hope this initiative will attract more people to discover Onomichi and eventually visit the area.
